Myanmar Street Food and Cooking Tour
Food, fun and lots of local interaction: our Myanmar Culinary Tour offers a unique insight in to the country’s people and food.
Traveling to Mandalay, Yangon, Bagan and Inle Lake the itinerary mixes classic touring with culinary activities. Venture through vibrant fresh markets, prepare lunch with a local family, take a rickshaw tour of popular tea shops and of course sample loads of tasty treats along the way.
Day 1: Yangon - arrival
Upon Arrival, meeting tour guide and moving to hotel for check-in. Enjoy the first day to visit to the most outstanding monument in Yangon: Shwedagon Pagoda and experience the local religion.
Day 2: Yangon – City tour (B/L)
In the morning, exporing the charm of Yangon city: starting from Sule pagoda to Colonial buildings including City Hall, Emmanuel church. Having lunch at a local teashop to enjoy Burmese tea and its traditional culture. Then visiting to a popular teashop which has a variety of Burmese traditional snacks and noodles. Visitors will have tea and an assortment of snacks and noodles.
In the afternoon, go shopping at Scott market which is the biggest market in Myanmar, being famous of its gems, jewelry and handicrafts.
Day 3: Yangon – Bagan temple plan (B/L)
Transfering to the airport for flight to the ancient capital of Bagan, one of Asia’s most extraordinary destinations. Head into the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market, the economic center of Bagan. At this bustling market, locals meet daily to buy and sell a variety of goods, from fruit and vegetables to clothing, china, and lacquerware.
Next visiting a Pone Yay Gyi shop, Bagan which is the most famous food street.
Continue to the gold-plated Shwezigon Pagoda, Bagan’s greatest reliquary, built to house relics of the Buddha brought from abroad.
Lunch at La Min Thit Burmese restaurant.
Next, driving to the small village of Wetkyi-in to see the wonderful Kubyaukgyi Temple, renowned for its ancient murals.
Taking a horse-cart ride to Ananda Temple, home to four great, gilded Buddha statues.
Day 4: Bagan – Tour (B/L)
Spending full day on exploring the remainder of Bagan which consists of more than 2500 temples and pagodas. This archaeological site brings visitors to the scared history of ancient Bagan capital with the development of Buddhism.
For lunch heading out of town to a palm garden and visiting the family of toddy palm climber.
Travelling further into the land of temple spires: Htilomino, Gawdamgangyi temple. The highlight of this day is the sunset from the second highest temple the Shwenandaw.
Day 5: Bagan – Mandalay – Mingun – Royal Ancient Palace (B/L)
Boarding the flight to Mandalay in the morning. Start sightseeing with a boat ride upstream to Mingun, home to Uncomplete Wall, Sandamuni pagoda and Mingun ringing bell.
Taking a break from sightseeing to discover another uniquely Burmese culinary treat: Le Phet Thoke. Eaten as snack, as a desert or even together with rice for a meal Le Phet Thoke, is a local salad made from fermented tea leaves.
Then, stopping at Min Thiha tea shop, which is a popular tea house in Mandalay serving two of the city’s most famous dishes: Mandalay Monte and Khotaung Monte.
After lunch, discovering the royal Mandalay vestiges and relics covering imperial Palace, Golden Palace Monastery and Kuthodaw Pagoda also known as the world biggest book. The highlight of this day is the panoramic sunset from the peak of Mandalay Hill.
Day 6: Mandalay Ancient Capitals ( Inwa & Sagaing) (B)
Meeting tour guide and moving tolocal market with a shopping list prepared by chef. Spend time on exploring the stalls where fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and meats are for sale as well as chilies, pastes and other sauces used in local cuisine. Tour guide will explain the various ingredients and helps visitors pick out the plumpest chicken, freshest fish and finest vegetables to use in cooking class.
Return to the local restaurant and meet the local chef. A cooking area is set-up for the class. Along with the chef, prepare the ingredients and use traditional techniques (such as mortar and pestle) to cook several Burmese favorites. During the demonstrationm, learning more about the cuisine of Myanmar, its influences and the typical eating habits of the local people.
After having prepared the dishes it’s time to sit down and enjoy a feast of freshly prepared delights. Ejoy your lunch.
In the afternoon, travelling to Ava, Amarapura to discover the Maha Aungmye Bonzan, Gabaya Monastery, Leaning Nam Myint Tower and the nearby attractions. Enjoy a walk over U Bein bridge, the longest teak wood bridge in Myanmar.
Day 7: Mandalay – Heho – Inle Lake (B/L)
Embarking on a flight to Heho, enjoying a scenic drive to Nyang Shwe.
Visiting to the Nyaung Shwe morning market where locals gather every morning to buy and sell fresh produce from the lake and its surroundings.
The embarking on a beautiful boat trip to explore the life of Intha people whose image exposes vividly through one leg rower.
Proceed to a traditional Inthar House at Tharlay village where spending time onpreparing the dishes with the family.
Spend time on discovering about local traditional work such as making boat, black smith, silk weaving and enjoy the uniqueness of Jumping Cat pagoda. Coming back to resort for an awesome sunset time.
Day 8: Inle Lake – Indein – Pa O village – Fly to Yangon (B/L)
Visiting one of the most unique market on Inle lake which happens 5 days in different villages in Inlayarea.
From the market, continuing by boat to Khaung Daing village on the northwest coast of the lake. Then watching (and perhaps participating) as the farmers sift the soy beans, boil them, mash them into balls then form tofu cakes to dry in the sun. This is a fabulous taste of local life on Inle Lake.
Proceed to Nyaung Shwe - have lunch at View Point Restaurant.
Then visiting Red Mountain Estate Vineyards and Winery, which is located at the north eastern part of Inle Lake. Enjoying magnificent view of Inle Lake and its stilt villages while tasting Red Mountain Estate wines. Also observing the grape varieties grown in the estate.
Transfer to airport for flight to Yangon.
On arrival, get a pick up to hotel.
Day 9: Yangon – Departure (B/L)
Breakfast at hotel. Starting with a visit to a local market with an experienced chef.
Learning about the various spices, vegetables and other ingredients used in Burmese cuisine and select and buy the necessary items for your personal cooking lesson. Returning to Monsoon Restaurant where qualified chef will guide visitors through the preparation of several popular Myanmar dishes. Then enjoying the prepared delicious Burmese meal.
Meeting driver and moving to the airport for next flight.
